What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a great way to slim and reshape your body. Liposuction removes unwanted fat from certain areas of the body and overall improves your body contours and proportion. It is a generally safe procedure if performed by a board certified plastic surgeon. The fat that is harvested can then be injected into other areas of the body, like the buttocks or face.

Liposuction can be performed alone or along with other procedures like a facelift and tummy tuck. Women and men both seek liposuction to treat problem areas on the body.

Dr. Samimi performs all liposuction procedures using a tumescent technique. This technique is considered a “Gold Standard”; this particular technique involves the injection of a dilute solution of lidocaine – as a local anesthetic and epinephrine – to control any bleeding that can occur prior to the suctioning of the fatty tissue. Fat is suctioned using a fine cannula inserted through very small incisions. Liposuction can be performed in the office under local anesthesia for smaller areas and in the operating room under general anesthesia for larger areas. As well as removing unwanted fat, liposuction may help with some skin tightening.

The recovery following liposuction depends on the extent of the liposuction performed, however recovery is generally quick. Most patients are able to return to work within a few days. A garment will need to be worn for 6 weeks. The small incisions usually heal well and are not typically visible after the redness resolves.

Will The Fat Come Back In The Areas That Have Been Liposuctioned?

-Generally not. If you maintain your weight following liposuction, fat should not come back in the treated areas. If you gain weight for any reason following liposuction, fat will be deposited less in the areas treated.

Is Liposuction A Good Treatment For Cellulite?

-Superficial liposuction may improve cellulite. Most of the presently advertised treatments for cellulite will only give you a very temporary improvement of cellulite. This improvement usually does not last beyond when these treatments are stopped.

Is Liposuction Dangerous?

-Liposuction is an operation and therefore has risks associated with it and the anesthesia given. Liposuction used to treat local areas in the appropriate setting is a very safe and well-tolerated procedure. Smaller areas, such as the outer thighs, hips and knees can be safely treated under local anesthesia in the office. Larger amounts can be safely removed in a surgery center
